Knee Pillow

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

If you like sleeping on your side, you probably know that subtle pain you feel on your knees, hips and lower back when your knees touch each other. This position causes pain because of the unnatural posture of your body which causes the joints on your hips to over extend. This may lead to a serious pain and soreness if staying in this posture is prolonged. What you need is to correct the position of the knees by using a knee pillow.

A knee pillow is a something that you could put between your knees, to keep them apart. By keeping the knees apart, the knee of the top leg will not be strained and will be aligned with the hips. This will prevent any sore to be felt on the joints.

Knee pillows are usually made with polyurethane foam either rectangular in shape or shaped like an hour glass. The rectangular shaped knee pillow are difficult to keep in place and would usually have a velcro strap so it would stay in position with your leg while the hour glass shaped knee pillow is more stable because it has trenches on both sides where you could place your legs in.

Knee pillows are cheap luxury products. They are very affordable but you don’t necessarily need to own or use knee pillows sold in the market. In fact, you could use a normal pillow as a knee pillow.

In South East Asia, China and Japan, it is customary to have an extra pillow to hug and keep the knees apart. It comes in different names but function the same way. Aside from having something to hug when you sleep, it also provides comfort by letting you maintain the correct posture by having your knees align with your hips.

Knee pillows would be a great companion in your sleep but as we said, it is a luxury more than a necessity. Even a normal or ordinary pillow could work as a knee pillow so you don’t have to spend so much on something you could replace with something cheaper.

But if you have the money to spare and you want an ergonomically designed pillow to support your knees, hips and back, then knee pillows would certainly be a great product for you.

Reading Pillow

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

If you like reading, then the reading pillow is probably an item you should check out. Reading is one of the oldest and most basic forms of entertainment, communication and source of information. Textbooks, novels, poetry, letters and even telegrams, we like to read them all because of the things that we want to learn, feel, or remember. From our youth, when our parents would read us fairy tales and adventure stories before we go to bed, we have been enthralled with reading that a lot of us still read right before we go to bed.

But, reading right before you sleep, although it might be a lifetime habit or routine, could lead to some discomfort. I’m sure that most of us would rather read on our beds than pull up a chair and read a book on study tables. And I’m sure that when you do, you’d prop up pillows so you could lean on them or else you’d feel some ache on your lower back and neck a few minutes after starting reading.

It’s a discomfort that we usually don’t pay much attention to. Maybe it’s because we have been doing it for so long that we have learned to ignore how sore our backs and necks are or perhaps it because we have learned to shift positions when our backs starts aching. But, whether we have learned to take the pain or have learned to shift and provide temporary relief from the soreness, the fact still remains that we do experience and feel soreness because of the posture we take when reading on the bed.

Even with pillows propped under you, it still won’t prevent the pain from seeping in. Pillows change shape eventually, and when they do, the support it gives you when you started reading is no longer the same. Plus, the pillow can’t exactly support your whole spine and that’s the reason why our backs and necks get stressed, thus, the pain.

But we don’t have to endure this burden without having to change our habit of reading in bed. By using a Reading pillow, we could enjoy comfort reading books, studying or even watching TV in bed. With these items, your back could be supported by a soft cushion while you sit on the bed.

There are various kinds and designs of reading pillows. There are wedge type reading pillows. They simply look like pillows which you could wedge between your back and your head board. This is one of the more practical items since it’s not as bulky and you could use it when you sleep as well.

There are bed lounge type reading pillows as well. These reading pillows look like the back rest of cars seats. You could wedge it between your back and the head board as well when you use it. What’s interesting about this type of reading pillow is that your back is not the only one that is supported. Some bed lounge reading pillow designs would have a head rest as well as arm rests. IT would be really beneficial to have one of these if you like reading. The only problem with this one is that bed lounge reading pillows are bulky. You could encounter problems in terms of storage, but other than that, this would be a great reading pillow.

There are other types as well, but they look more like normal throw pillows and bolsters that have no special features in their designs.

These pillows are just for the convenience of bookworms. It’s not a necessity but if you had one, you’ll definitely not regret it.

Floor Pillows

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Kids, teens and even the young at heart like to sit down on the floor. Whenever there’s a gathering and everyone’s playing scrabble or monopoly or some family oriented board game, it won’t be unusual to find yourselves sitting on the floor of the living room. Kids who play video games wouldn’t sit on the bed or a chair while they play Play Station or Xbox. They would most likely be on the floor while their shoulders flinch with controllers on their hands.

It’s fun and it feels free to be on the floor doing fun stuff. Unfortunately, in terms of comfort, the floor doesn’t provide much of it. Floors are flat, hard surfaces that won’t adjust to the shape of your body. And because it doesn’t bend or follow the shape of your body, your weight is focused only on the areas or part of your body that makes contact on the floor’s surface. What this entails is discomfort and stress on the person’s body, specifically the lower back.

Games don’t end quick and video games end longer, and the longer you sit on the floor, the more stress there will be on your back. To avoid the pain from seeping in because of the wrong posture and the improper weight distribution, it is highly suggested that you use either chair a cushion or at least sit on a floor pillow.

With a floor pillow, you will be seated more comfortably and you will experience less stress on your spine. Your posture could also be more proper since you don’t have to endure the hard floor anymore.

There are various types of floor pillows available out there. There are cotton pillows, foam pillows and bean bags. Each of these have their own characteristics and depending on your need or preference, one of these would be the best type of floor pillow for you. They come in different colors and shapes as well. There are square floor pillows, round floor pillows, and huge, chair like bean bags and more.

With these bean bags, playing, hanging out and even spending holidays would be fun not only for kids but anyone who likes to join in the fun. Floor pillows, although it is more of a luxury than a need would be something that you’d end up loving having in your home.
